🔤 The Ge’ez Alphabet: Let’s Start With the Basics!

Ge’ez has its own special script, called "Fidel." Each letter changes shape based on the vowel sound.

Let’s begin with the first seven from the letter ሀ:

Letter	Sound

ሁ	hu
ሂ	hi
ሃ	ha
ሄ	he
ህ	hə
ሆ	ho

ሰላም (sälam) = Peace
ፍቅር (f᷑qər) = Love
እናት (enat) = Mother
አባት (abat) = Father

Let’s learn how to say “to pray” in Ge’ez:

English Sentence	Ge’ez Sentence
I pray	አነ እጼሊ
You (m.s.) pray	አንተ ትጼሊ*
You (f.s.) pray	አንቲ ትጼልዪ
He prays	ውእቱ ይጼሊ
She prays	ይእቲ ትጼሊ*
We pray	ንሕነ ንጼሊ
You (m.p.) pray	አንትሙ ትጼሊዩ
You (f.p.) pray	አንትን ትጼልያ
They (m.) pray	ውእቶሙ ይጼልዩ
They (f.) pray	ውእቶን ይጼልያ
